The Institute Of Road Transport Polytechnic College, Bargur was started by the Institute of Road Transport, Taramani Chennai-600 113,
in the year 1992-1993 with the idea of imparting technical education to the wards of the Transport Corporation Employees.
The IRT Polytechnic College, Bargur started fuctioning at Govt. Polytechnic College, Krishnagiri Campus in 1992-1993 with
Electrical and Electronics Engineering Branch with the strength of 60. In 1993-1994, Electronics and Communication Engineering Branch was started with the student strength of 30.
In the year 1994-1995 the strength was increased to 120 with two branches Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE) and Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE).
The polytechnic college was shifted to permanent campus at Orappam village in Chennai-Bangalore National Highways with 10.17 acres of land.
In the year 1995-1996, Computer Engineering Branch was started with additional strength of 60 students. In 2013-2014, Mechanical Engineering Branch was started with the intake of 60.
Now the institute is functioning with four branches with intake of 240 students per year. Now the institute is functioning in the
Permanent building of G+1 floor in 9.17 acres of land. The institute is developed with high reputation and one of the best institute in Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri District. Now the institute is CONVERTED AS GOVERNMENT POLYTECHNIC COLLEGE,BARGUR. Out of 240 seats 65% of seats for Government Quota (Open to all) and 35% of seats reserved for Wards of Transport Employees.
